Calliope the Sea Maid - August 20, 2022

And here is my latest aquatic creation - "CALLIOPE". Her name means "beautifully voiced" in honor of her spirit totem - the Humpback Whale. At first, I was planning to make her a siren, but I should have known better than to predict such a thing. Dolls have a way of telling you who they are, and not the other way around. When I completed the face painting, I just could not see her as a predator and thought of her as an older sister to CALYSTA. I also found out that in Greek mythology, Callliope was the eldest of the nine muses who inspired artists, poets, scientists and musicians - that's quite an impressive list!

I wish that I had been able to make more mermaids this summer but time really got away on me since there were so many other things going on. With fall coming and things starting to slow down a bit, I am looking forward to making more of these wall dolls and perhaps some others in a different vein.
